Energetics of charged point defects in rutile TiO2 by density functional theory

چکیده
The defect formation energies of all possible charge states of point defects in TiO2, including titanium interstitials, titanium vacancies and oxygen vacancies, are calculated in the phase space of temperature, oxygen partial pressure and Fermi level by combining density functional theory (DFT) and thermodynamic calculations. The point defect phase diagram illustrates that fully charged defects dominate in most regimes. The calculations not only give reasonable defect formation energies compared with prior experimental measurements, but also predict n-type TiO2 at high T and low PO2 , and p-type TiO2 at low T and high PO2 , which agrees well with experimental data. In addition, we evaluate methods for correcting the effects of artificial electrostatic interactions caused by periodic boundary conditions in the DFT calculations, including the electrostatic potential alignment correction (DV correction) and the Makov–Payne correction. 2009 Acta Materialia Inc. DFT Study on Oxygen-Vacancy Stability in Rutile/Anatase TiO2: Effect of Cationic Substitutions
In this study, a full-potential density functional theory was used to investigate the effects of Ti substitution by different cations. In both rutile and anatase, Ti atom was replaced by Ce, Au, Sn, Ag, Mo, Nb, Zr, and Y. Phase stability, electronic structure and formation energy of oxygen vacancy were compared for rutile and anatase. The results indicated that substitution of Ce and Zr increas...
متن کاملHydrogen Impurity Defects in Rutile TiO2
Hydrogen-related defects play crucial roles in determining physical properties of their host oxides. In this work, we report our systematic experimental and theoretical (based on density functional theory) studies of the defect states formed in hydrogenated-rutile TiO2 in gaseous H2 and atomic H. In gas-hydrogenated TiO2, the incorporated hydrogen tends to occupy the oxygen vacancy site and neg...
متن کاملImaging of the hydrogen subsurface site in rutile TiO2.
From an interplay between simultaneously recorded noncontact atomic force microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy images and simulations based on density functional theory, we reveal the location of single hydrogen species in the surface and subsurface layers of rutile TiO2. Subsurface hydrogen atoms (H(sub)) are found to reside in a stable interstitial site as subsurface OH groups detecta...
متن کاملRole of the Support Effects on the Catalytic Activity of Gold Clusters: A Density Functional Theory Study
It is demonstrated that the support effects play a crucial role in the gold nanocatalysis. Two types of support are considered—the “inert” support of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) with the N and B vacancy defects and the “active” support of rutile TiO2(110). It is demonstrated that Au and Au2 can be trapped effectively by the vacancy defects in h-BN. In that case, the strong adsorption on the ...

In this work, the formation of oxygen-vacancy defect in 3d metals-doped TiO2 anatase and rutile structures is first investigated. The systematic calculations of formation energy, crystalline stability, band structure and density of state (DOS) of TiO2 samples of anatase and rutile doped with 3d transition metals with and without oxygen defect is done using FHI-aims as a software package based o...
